Discharge of Firearms, Gorey, Co. Wexford on the 29/1/20

Gardaí at Gorey Garda Station are investigating an incident where a firearm was discharged at members on patrol in Glandoran, Gorey, Co. Wexford.

On Wednesday the 29th of January 2020 at approximately 8.30am, Gardaí attached to Gorey Garda Station received a report of a male acting suspiciously in a field on the Carnew Road.

Two uniform Gardaí responded and made their way to the field, they walked towards the man.  When they approached him, he ran and jumped into the garden of an adjoining dwelling.  The male then ran back along the outside of the ditch toward Grattan Court.  As he passed the entrance to the field both Gardaí attempted to speak with him, at this stage Gardaí became aware that the man had a handgun in his possession.

The man then made his way to the entrance of Grattan Court where he got into a blue BMW 06W1012 which was parked facing out of the estate.  This car then drove towards Carnew on the R725.  Gardaí followed and the BMW made a number of dangerous manoeuvres attempting to evade them.  Twice during the subsequent chase the BMW slowed down and fired a shot at the Gardaí before eventually getting away at speed.

At approximately 8.50am Gardaí received a report of a car on fire at Bann Bridge, Banntown, Gorey.  Responding Gardaí discovered that the BMW involved in the earlier incident was on fire at this location.

Appeal:

  • Investigations have concluded that the Blue BMW was sold on the 12th of January 2020.  The purchaser provided false information to the seller.
  • The Carnew Road is the home for a number of primary and secondary schools in the town. At the time of the incident there were a number of parents bringing children to school and Gardaí would like to appeal to these parents to come forward with any information they might have.
