Go Purple Day

Go Purple Day is an initiative led by An Garda Síochána with the support of domestic abuse services across Ireland. It aims to raise awareness about supports and services available to people who experience domestic abuse.

Domestic abuse includes all acts of physical, sexual, psychological or economic abuse that occur within the family or domestic unit or between former or current spouse or partners, whether or not the perpetrator shares or has shared the same residence as the victim.

In many cases people suffering from domestic abuse are unaware of the support services available to them.

Go Purple Day was initiated in 2020 by community policing Garda Stacey Looby who recognised the impact the pandemic restrictions were having on people living in fear of domestic abuse. Garda Looby highlighted how An Garda Síochána and the domestic abuse services could support people and let them know the Covid restrictions of movement didn’t apply to those fleeing domestic abuse.

Show your support for Go Purple Day by going purple![S30179471]  Whether it’s your outfit, your social media profile, or your workplace -  every splash of colour makes a difference. Those getting involved in the initiative are encouraged to share photos via social media using the hashtag #GoPurpleDay.
