Prostitution

The Gardaí at the National Bureau of Criminal Investigation are advising members of the public, particularly landlords in relation to renting their property to people engaged in prostitution.  They will offer advice to landlords as to how to prevent their properties being used for this purpose.  The brothels are usually properties rented or leased by ‘front couples’ so there is no direct link to the criminals behind the organisation.

Advice to landlords:

Vet prospective tenants carefully:

• Look for Photo ID

• Contact Referees

• Look for Phone numbers

• Set up standing orders and direct debits

Inspection:

• Make sure letting agreement has a right of inspection and exercise it

• Make sure tenants are living there

To knowingly permit a brothel to be run on your premises is a crime

Signs to look out for:

• Lack of personal posessions on the property

• Curtains closed during the day

• High volume of callers to the property

If you have suspicions:

• Check with neighbours

• Contact Gardai

Cost to landlord:

- Reduction in value and reputation of the neighbourhood

- Loss of revenue when tenants are removed or evicted

- Complaints from neighbours

- Lengthy legal cases

- To knowingly permit a brothel to be run on your premises is a crime and may result in a criminal conviction
