On this month’s Crimecall Garda Derek Cloughley was in studio to update that the public on the roll out of the mobility project that was featured on last month’s programme. In addition, Derek informed the public of the annual DUI Christmas and New Year campaign which will commence on the 29 November.

Derek also gave an overview of last year’s enforcement statistics:

  • Over 1,000 drivers arrested last Christmas campaign for alcohol or drug driving
  • Over 6,500 drivers arrested this year (Jan-Sept) for alcohol or drug driving
  • Many are detected multiple times over the legal limit
  • 60% are drivers are between the ages 20-40

Derek offered advice on the recently introduced legislation creating the offence of dangerous overtaking of a pedal cycle.

Finally Derek mentioned Pedestrian safety highlighting an increase from (31) in 2017 to (42) in 2018, and how traditionally there can be an increase during the festive period due to visibility and sadly, alcohol consumption.
