Missing Persons Unit 

The Missing Persons Unit provides advice, guidance and assistance to Gardaí investigating Missing Person Incidents. The Missing Persons Unit also provides assistance with the investigation of unidentified human remains located in this jurisdiction and internationally. In the course of its work, the Missing Persons Unit liaises with international police forces to develop best practice.  The Unit also assists with international enquiries via Interpol.

Missing Person Statistics

Definition of a Missing Person –“Anyone whose whereabouts are unknown and the circumstances of the disappearance presents a risk of harm to the missing person or any other person.”

Please note that when missing person press releases are issued for juveniles the following guidance is attached in respect of the photograph:

"Note to Editor/Not for Publication:

• A photograph of Missing Person is attached to press release. This photograph has been provided for the sole purpose of assisting a Garda investigation into tracing a person reported as missing and should not be used for any other purpose.

• In the case of juveniles (person under 18 years) An Garda Síochána draws your attention to section 31(1) Child Care Act 1991 as amended, which may be relevant. "No matter likely to lead members of the public to identify a child who is or has been the subject of proceedings under Part III, IV, IVA or VI shall be published or broadcast”.
