The Garda National Economic Crime Bureau (‘GNECB’) (formerly known as the Garda Bureau of Fraud Investigation) was established in 1995. The Detective Chief Superintendent in charge of the Bureau reports to Assistant Commissioner, Organised and Serious Crime (‘OSC’). The Bureau operates on a national basis and provides specialist support and guidance to national economic crime investigators.

Detective Chief Superintendent GNECB is assisted by two Detective Superintendents and a number of Detective Inspectors with individual responsibility for the management of the constituent units within the Bureau. The main challenges facing the Bureau are the rapidly changing environment in which those perpetrating economic crime operate in an atmosphere of increased technology usage and advancement, more complex criminality and questionable business practices.

To provide support and assistance to local and regional investigators.
To play a pro-active role in the prevention and detection of economic crime.
To investigate all cases of foreign bribery and corruption as per legislation.
To act as a central repository for economic crime related intelligence.
