Background:George Mordaunt, born on 24th September, 1897, came from 23, St. John’s Street, Blackpitts, Dublin. Formerly a railway guard he joined An Garda Síochána on 26th March, 1925. He served in the Volunteers (1919-1922) and served in ‘D’ Company, 2nd Battalion of the Dublin Brigade. Subsequently, he served as a quartermaster-sergeant in the National Army (1922-1925) before becoming a Garda. A married man with two children, Detective Garda Mordaunt also served at Blackrock, Pearse Street, Sneem and Clontarf.

Circumstances:

On 24th October, 1942, as part of ongoing investigations into major criminal activity, Detective Garda Mordaunt was one of a number of Gardai who went to Holly Road, Donnycarney, Dublin, to arrest a group of wanted men.  Just prior to the arrival of the Gardai the men escaped from the house and during the course of a search for them Detective Garda Mordaunt became separated from his comrades.  It was a short time later that he was missed, and on a search being made for him, his body was discovered in the garden of a house in an adjoining street.  Garda Mordaunt had been fatally wounded by a firearm.
