Garda safety message

Gardai are advising members of the public to continue to exercise extreme caution on the roads.

Although some of the snow may be thawing in places ice and black ice can still be present and be hazardous to motorists.

Public transport should be used where possible.

Motorists are asked not to make unnecessary journeys.

Drivers should be conscious of the safety of pedestrians.

Pedestrians should avoid walking on the road and wear hi-vis jackets.  In addition people should avoid standing outside buildings as snow falling from roofs can cause injury.

Current indications are that temperatures are to remain very low and drop further later on and this may create further difficult driving conditions.  We are asking road users to be conscious of this when making journeys.

We would ask people to keep in contact with neighbours, particularly those living alone, to call around and check on them and to not assume that someone else will do so.
