Mutual Assistance Section

Mutual Assistance:  

Execution of Mutual Legal Assistance Requests from other jurisdictions through The Central Authority for Mutual Assistance, Department Justice. The various responsibilities of the section are as follows: 

  • Policy in relation to Sections 74 and 75 of Criminal Justice (Mutual Assistance) Act 2008. 
  • Preparation and drafting, tracking and monitoring of outgoing Mutual Assistance Requests in support of Districts, Divisions and National Units of An Garda Síochána. 
  • Policy on liaison with Units within An Garda Síochána to ensure proper execution of all incoming requests for Mutual Legal Assistance. 
  • Policy in relation to Joint Investigation Teams (JIT) which involves cooperation in relation to the investigation of serious crimes at an international level. 
  • Engagement with the Department of Justice on the introduction of European Investigation Orders (EIO) for Ireland. 

In conjunction with the Legal and Legacy Section’s, Mutual Assistance Section supports International Letters of Request’s / Mutual Legal Assistance requests from Northern Ireland in relation to Coroners Enquiries and Historic cases.
