Garda National Bureau of Criminal Investigation

The Garda National Bureau of Criminal Investigation, operates under the command of Assistant Commissioner, Organised & Serious Crime.  The remit of the Garda National Bureau of Criminal Investigation is charged at a national and international level to conduct criminal investigations, support investigations, review investigations and to examine issues relating to investigations.  Criminal investigations are undertaken to seek, collect, and gather evidence of crime which is a public wrong that is punishable by law.

The Mission of the Garda National Bureau of Criminal Investigation is to enhance the safety and protect the trust of the people of Ireland by enforcing the law with integrity and professionalism.

The Garda National Bureau of Criminal Investigation operates a number of offices and sections that carry a criminal investigation remit, which include:

• Criminal Investigation Department – concerned at a national and international level with the investigation of a wide range of major crime types committed within and outside the jurisdiction e.g. Murder, false imprisonment.
• Internal Investigations Section – Investigations criminal incidents and possible suspicions of law breaking, wrongdoing and professional misconduct attributed to members of An Garda Síochána.
• Serious Crime Review Team (SCRT) – (colloquially known as the Cold Case Unit) is concerned with the review of unresolved historical and current major crime incidents with the primary aim of assisting in identifying new investigative opportunities in a case.  The team’s adopted motto is “to the living we owe respect; to the dead we owe the truth”.
• Extradition Department – is concerned with the surrender of fugitives (wanted on warrant) from the member States of the European Union and other sovereign States for the trial and punishment of crimes in the Criminal Court of Justice.
• Stolen Motor Vehicle Investigation Unit – is concerned with the organised theft of automobiles for parts and transportation, farm and plant machinery, the apprehension of high risk offenders and engagement with motor car theft suppression strategy.
• Stolen Arts & Antiquities Unit – undertakes the disruption of criminal networks engaged in the theft and laundering of cultural property within the State and investigates the sale of fake and forged works of art impacting upon the State.
• Intellectual Property & Counterfeit Investigations Unit – is concerned with the enforcement of the law in relation to intellectual property; that is, inventions, literary and artistic works; and symbols, names and images used in commerce.
• Environmental & Waste Crime Investigation Unit – is concerned with the enforcement of environmental and waste crime that have a strong organised crime dimension.  The Bureau plays a role as a law enforcement agency in the investigation of wildlife and environmental crime.
• Crimes of Genocide, Crimes against Humanity and War Crimes – is concerned with the investigation and prosecution of this type of crime, provides support to international police services in carrying out domestic enquires and tasks pertaining to genocide and war crime investigations; locating and engaging with victims, witnesses and suspects related to international genocide and war crimes and engaging and contributing to the European Network for investigation and prosecution of genocide crimes against humanity and war crimes.     
• Passport Fraud Investigation Section – is concerned with the investigation of passport offences  on matters relating to the Passport Act, 2008 and the targeting of persons suspected of being involved in organised and serious crime who operate at a national and international level with the use of false Irish Passports.
