Background:
Walter Hennelly, son of Patrick and Nellie Hennelly, was born on 30th June, 1951. He came from Greeve, Breaffy, Castlebar, Co. Mayo. Formerly a trainee manager he joined An Garda Síochána on 23rd February, 1972. On completion of training he was allocated to Omeath. He was allocated to Edward Street Garda Station, Limerick on 30th June, 1972. Garda Hennelly was single. His spare-time activities included Gaelic football, rugby and basketball.

Circumstances:

On 13th May, 1974, Garda Hennelly was on checkpoint duty at Mulgrave Street, Limerick, at the junction of the Tipperary and Bruff road, when he was struck by a passing car. Garda Hennelly was taken to Barrington’s Hospital where he died from his injuries.
