Investigation into deaths at Newcastlewest, Limerick on the 16/11/10 - Renewed appeal

Gardai in Newcastlewest investigating the deaths of Sarah Hines (25 years), Reece Hines (3 years), Amy Hines (5 months) and Alicia Brough (20 years) are renewing their appeal for information.

Gardai are asking for anyone who was in the Hazlegrove Estate on the 15th or 16th of November, to contact them.  We are also appealing for anyone with information about the incident to contact the incident room at Newcastlewest Garda Station on 069 20650. To date Gardai have received valuable assistance from the wider community in Newcastlewest.


The 31 year old male arrested in connection with the incident remains in custody. He is still receiving medical attention for a hand injury at Cork University Hospital.  (The time spent in the hospital is excluded from the period of detention).


The post mortem examinations have been completed and it has been established that the victims died as a result of stab wounds.


An investigation involving up to 50 Gardai is ongoing, including interviewing witnesses and door to door inquiries.  A technical examination has commenced at the house and will take a number of days to complete.


It is not proposed to facilitate any press briefing or interviews at this time, bearing in mind that there is a person in custody.

Gardaí in Newcastlewest, Co. Limerick are investigating the deaths of four people.

The bodies of the four people - two children (a 3 year old male and a 5 month old female) and two women in their 20's - were discovered in Hazel Grove Estate, Gortboy, Newcastle West shortly after 1.35 p.m. today.

The house has been sealed off for technical examination and the services of the State Pathologist have been requested.

A 31 year old male has been arrested and is being detained at Henry Street Garda station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.

Anyone who may have seen anything unusual near 18 Hazlegrove, Gortboy, Newcastlewest in Limerick in the 24 hour period prior to 1.30pm today (16th November 2010) is asked to contact Newcastle Garda station on 069-20650 or the Garda Confidential Line 1800-666-111.
