St Patrick's Festival Traffic Guidance

Gardai in Dublin are asking motorists to exercise extreme care on the capital’s roads during St. Patrick’s Festival celebrations in the continuing campaign to reduce fatal and serious injury accidents on the capital’s roads.

The Garda Siochana analysis service has conducted extensive research in the Dublin Region to identify key locations and times where collisions involving death and serious injury occur.

The Dublin Metropolitan Region Traffic Corps will be using this information to plan operations and target resources for maximum effectiveness. Speaking today at Dublin Castle, Chief Superintendent Aidan Reid said: “The significant data produced by the Garda Analysis service shows that there are three core periods for collisions involving death and serious injury:

1.      They are - 1am to 4am and tend to involve single occupant collisions.

2.      10am to 1pm when there is a combination of deaths and injuries involving motorists and vulnerable road users.

3.       5pm to 8pm where the primary group affected are vulnerable road users".

Chief Superintendent Reid continued’ "speed, like drink driving, has become  socially unacceptable".

Gardai will be focussing resources in the Dublin region at these key times to reduce these incidents and speed detection will focus on the 50kph where vulnerable road users are most at risk of serious injury or death.

Chief Superintendent Reid will be available for interview on Monday the 15th March 2010, please e-mail you request to the Garda Press Office at pressoffice@garda.ie
