Background:
George Rice, born on 15th May, 1956, came from Knockeens, Kilgarvan, Co. Kerry. He joined An Garda Síochána on 10th June, 1981. On completion of training he was allocated to Store Street Garda Station on 13th November, 1981, and also served at Union Quay and Mallow Road. Garda Rice was married with three children. His spare-time activities included hurling, football and tug-o-war.

Circumstances:

At 5 a.m. on Sunday, 22nd April, 2001, Garda Brendan Rice, with his colleague, Garda James McIntyre, were on mobile patrol on the North Ring Road, Cork, near Ballyvolane, when their patrol car was involved in a collision. Garda Rice died from injuries sustained in the accident.
