Background:
John O’Donnell, born on 10th June, 1905, came from Burtonport, Co. Donegal. He joined An Garda Síochána on 29th January, 1925. His first allocation was to Crusheen Garda Station, Co. Clare and he also served at Ballynacargy and Glassan both in Co. Westmeath. Garda O’Donnell was married with three children. 

Circumstances:

On 19th July, 1940, Garda O’Donnell was bathing at Ballybunion beach, Co. Kerry when he observed two girls in difficulty in the water and went to their assistance. After bringing both girls to safety Garda O’Donnell was drowned when he was overcome by a huge wave and swept out to sea.
