Background:
John McMahon, born on 19th April, 1942, came from Ballinagoul, Glin, Co. Limerick. He joined An Garda Síochána on 3rd October, 1962. He served at Athy, Ballon, Myshall and Castledermot. Garda McMahon was married with one child. He took a keen interest in the affairs of the Garda Representative Association (GRA), holding the position of Chairman of local Divisional Committee. 

Circumstances:

At 12.10 am on Saturday, 27th January, 1990, Garda McMahon, with another colleague, was investigating criminal damage to a window at the Carlow Lodge Hotel. At Morterstown, Kilkenny Road, Carlow, the two Gardai got out of the patrol car and were on the hard shoulder of the roadway speaking with three people in relation to the incident. A vehicle, coming from the Kilkenny direction, struck members of the group. Garda McMahon suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene.
