Background:
Patrick McLoughlin, born on 9th December, 1941, came from ‘The Bungalow’, Patrick Street, Mullingar, Co. Westmeath. He joined An Garda Síochána on 19th April, 1961. His first posting was to Belturbet, Co. Cavan. He also served at Clane, Oldcastle and Trim Garda Stations. Promoted Sergeant in 1975 he moved to Omeath, Co. Louth and transferred to Dunboyne in 1977. Sergeant McLoughlin was married with four children.

Circumstances:

On 11th April, 1983, Sergeant McLoughlin was asleep in bed when he heard a knock on the door of Dunboyne Garda Station. Sergeant McLoughlin’s house formed part of the station building. Sergeant McLoughlin opened the upstairs window of his house to see who was knocking at the door. As he did so a man fired a shot hitting Sergeant McLoughlin. He later died from his wounds.
