Motorists travelling on the N5, in either direction, on the Westport to Castlebar road are asked to use the alternative Newport route.
The N5 will remain closed until mid-day and access will be strictly restricted to locals.

Gardaí at Castlebar are investigating a fatal road traffic collision that occurred shortly before 9.30pm last night, Wednesday 28th September 2011.
A 90 year old male pedestrian was killed after he was hit by a truck on the N5 Westport to Castlebar Road at Dooleague. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The road has been closed to facilitate a forensic collision and diversions are in place.
