Investigation into the abduction of the wife of an official of An Post worker in Kildare on the 4/4/11

Gardaí in Kildare have launched an investigation following the abduction of the wife of an official of An Post worker from her home in Kildare on the 4th April 2011 and the false imprisonment of his family (2 children).

At 9.30pm last night, the 4th April 2011 a number of armed men entered a private residence in Fennore, Co. Kildare.  The wife of the official was taken from her home at approx 11pm the 4th April 2011.  This morning the An Post official was given instructions and he drove to the GPO on O'Connell Street.  A demand was made that the An Post official obtain a sum of money from the institution and await instructions.

During the course of the morning, Gardaí became aware of the incident and a comprehensive response team was put in place involving both local and national units.

Just after 9.15 am this morning, the 5th April 2011 the woman released herself and contact was made with the Gardai. She was physically uninjured.

Gardaí are appealing for information from the public on any activity which they might have seen in the following areas:

1.      In the area surrounding Fennore, Co. Kildare over the last number of days and weeks.

2.      The route between Kildare, along the M7 and the GPO in Dublin

3.      Any unusual or suspicious activity around the GPO last night and this morning.

4.      In relation to 2 cars as listed below. 

Gardaí are also appealing for information on 2 family cars that were involved in this incident 05 DL 4275 a Honda CRV, silver in colour and a silver Mercedes 11 D 13049.

Any unusual activity around Rolestown, North Co. Dublin in the early hours of this morning and overnight.

The movement of silver Mercedes 11 D 13049 from last night in Fennore and around Rolestown and to Boroimhe where it was found burnt out this morning 5th April 2011.

There were at least 4 males were involved in this incident some of who were armed.

Both the official and his wife and family were uninjured but have been through a traumatic experience and while we appreciate any assistance that media can give us in appealing for information on this crime, we would ask that they respect the privacy of the individuals involved as far as possible.
