Update: Discharge of Firearm threatening Unarmed Uniform Members of An Garda Síochána - North Wexford 29th January 2020

Shortly after 8.30am, today Wednesday 29 January 20202 unarmed uniform Gardaí in Gorey responded to reports of a male acting in an unusual manner in the Gorey Hill area of Gorey.

On arrival the two Gardaí encountered a male who pointed a handgun in their direction and threatened them.

The male fled the scene in a Blue BMW 318 registration 06W1012.

This car was followed by uniform patrol car and failed to stop for Gardaí along the Gorey to Carnew Road R725 driving erratically and dangerously.

On two occasions the driver of the car slowed down the BMW and discharged shots from a handgun at pursuing unarmed uniformGardaí.

This male is described, as 6’ tall, slim build, Long Black Jacket, Scarf over face, wearing a hat.

This car was subsequently discovered burnt out in the townland of Banntown, Co. Wexford. Gardaí are appealing for any information on the activities and location of this Blue BMW 318 06W1012 overnight and in recent days.

Gardaí are appealing for any person driving or using the Gorey to Carnew Rd R725 between 0800 and 0900 this morning, in particular any person with dashcam video to contact Gorey Garda Station 053 9430690.

It is believed that the suspect fled the Banntown area in a dark grey/ black Skoda Fabia car (or similar), possibly driven by a second male. This vehicle has not been located at this time and An Garda Síochána appeals to anyone with information on its exact identity or current location to provide us with that information.

Speaking at Gorey Garda station, Superintendent Gerard McGrath said ‘The illegal discharge of a firearm is a reckless act at any time but the discharge of a firearm at unarmed uniform members of An Garda Síochána responding to the public needs is an outrageous act. I will ensure that this criminal act is investigated fully and I appeal to any member of the public with any information, no matter how small, to call An Garda Síochána with that information to bring this dangerous culprits to justice.’

Both members of An Garda Síochána were uninjured in this dangerous encounter and are receiving the full supports of An Garda Síochána welfare services.
