Two arrested following attempted armed robbery Gorey Co. Wexford 24th April 2014

Between 12.45 and 1pm this afternoon 24th April 2014 two masked men entered the Permanent TSB branch at Main Street Gorey, Co Wexford.

One of the men was believed to be carrying a handgun.  They threatened staff and demanded cash.  Following activation of the panic alarm the men left empty handed and got into a black Fiat Punto driven by a third raider.

This car was spotted and pursued by Gardaí from Gorey Garda Station and it headed out the Arklow Road.  At an area known as Kilmurray Cross the raiders hijacked a second car, a Toyota Corolla, and went in the direction of Ballywilliam.  A short distance later the raiders attempted to hijack a third car and they were confronted by Gardaí who deployed incapacitant spray and arrested one man at the scene.  A second was arrested and a firearm was recovered in fields nearby a short time later.  One Garda member received minor injuries during the incident.

The men, who are in their 20s, are currently detained under Section 30 of the Offences Against The State Act, 1939, at Enniscorthy and Gorey Garda Stations and a search is ongoing in the area with the assistance of the Garda Air Support Unit.
