Crime Statistics (Quarter 2) 2013

The Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan has welcomed the publication of the CSO Q2 Crime Statistics.

"These annualised statistics show that the intensive work being carried out by members of An Garda Síochána continue to have a very real and tangible effect on the quality of life in communities around the country. I welcome the reductions in 12 out of 14 categories including:

 - weapons and explosives offences (down 13.9%)

 - controlled drug offences (down 12.6%)

 - attempts/threats to murder, assaults, harassments and related offences (down 10%)

 - fraud, deception and related offences (down 10%)

 - burglary/aggravated burglary (down 9%)

 - sexual offences (down 7.9%)

An Garda Síochána will continue to combat crime in all its forms, and our continued commitment to deal with the significant threat posed by dissident groups is reflected in the recent discovery over the weekend. It is through targeted intelligence led operations such as these that we can most effectively disrupt subversive and criminal gangs and ensure that benefits are seen by lawful citizens going about their daily business on the streets of the cities and towns of the country.

One death on the roads of our country is one too many and we are all too aware that the increased number of fatalities on our roads this year means more families tragically affected by the loss of a loved one. We will continue to educate, and enforce road traffic legislation, and we appeal to members of the public to take on board information that we make available to them, such as the awareness campaign around ‘Fatal Friday’.”

In conclusion the Commissioner highlighted the importance of co-operation between An Garda Síochána and local communities nationwide:

"As a force, we can never over-emphasise the importance of the partnership between ourselves and the community in continuing to prevent and detect crime and maintaining a safe environment for everyone.”
