House fire in Mullingar, Westmeath on the 22/8/11

Gardai at Mullingar are investigating a fire which occurred at a house at Grange Crescent, Mullingar, Co. Westmeath at approximately 1.50am this morning (22/8/11) in which a woman and a female child have been injured.

Five occupants of the house, an adult male, an adult female and 3 children (13yrs,7yrs & 6yrs) had escaped through an upstairs window.  Two members of An Garda Síochána  entered the house and successfully rescued a 2 year old girl who was trapped in an upstairs bedroom of the house.   

All six occupants of the house were removed to the Midlands Regional Hospital in Mullingar. Subsequently two of the children were removed to Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital Crumlin. The adult female is in a serious condition.

The two Garda members were also treated at the Midlands Regional Hospital suffering from smoke inhalation.

The scene has been preserved for technical examination and an investigations are continuing.
