Robbery at jewellery shop on Mardyke Street, Athlone on the 6/3/10 - Arrests

Gardai investigating a robbery at a jewellery shop in Athlone on the 6th of March have arrested three men this afternoon, the 10th March 2010.

The three men, one of whom is in his 30's and two in their 20's, were arrested at 2.30 p.m. at Dublin Airport.   They were taken to Athlone Garda Station, where they are detained under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act 1939. They may be held for up to 72 hours.

Gardai at Athlone are investigating the circumstances of a robbery which occurred at a jewellery shop on Mardyke Street on the 6th March 2010.


At approximately 1.30pm two males entered the shop armed with what is believed to be an incapactitant spray.  During the course of the raid the spray was administered on an employee and customer, both female. They were both taken by ambulance to Portiuncula Hospital, Ballinasloe.   


The raiders made off with an undisclosed amount of jewellery.


The first male is described as approximately 6’ tall, believed to be aged in his late 20's or early 30's.  He was wearing a black jacket and trousers and a dark base ball cap.


The second male is described as approximately 5’8’’ in height with blonde hair and also aged in his late 20's or early 30's. He was also wearing dark coloured clothing.


Gardai are appealing to anyone who was in the St. Mary’s Square, Irishtown or Mardyke Street area of Athlone between 12.30pm and 1.30 pm on the 6/3/10 and who may have witnessed this incident or noticed any suspicious activity to contact them.
