At about 6.30 a.m. this morning, the 4 January 2010, a number of armed men forced their way into a house off Bath Avenue, Irishtown. The family who occupies the house, an employee of a security company, his mother and niece, were held hostage.

Sometime later, it appears the mother and the niece were taken from the house.  No vehicle description is available at this time.

The employee of the security company operating under duress went to the Bank of  Ireland in O'Connell Street at around 11.30am where a security van was making a delivery.

The employee obtained a quantity of cash from the delivery van and was directed to go to a location in Drumcondra in a white Renault van. The employee left the vehicle which contained the quantity of cash at that location.

The alarm was raised and Gardaí became aware of the incident. The mother and niece were later released unharmed in Shankill at 12.30p.m.

The employee of the security company went into Bray Garda Station at 2p.m.

Gardai would like to talk to anyone who was in the O'Connell Gardens area of Irishtown this morning 4 January 2010.

The investigation is being led by Superintendent Finbarr O'Brien, Donnybrook, assisted by members from the National Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the Garda Technical Bureau.
