Arrest of 5 males suspected of being involved in dissident Republican activities in Louth on the 8/8/10 - Update

Following the arrest of 5 males suspected of being involved in dissident Republican activities in Louth yesterday, the 8th August 2010, a number of follow up searches were carried out in Co. Louth and Co. Monaghan.

As a result of these searches  the following have been seized: 6 vehicles, a handgun and ammunition, a shotgun and ammunition and components of an explosive device.

All five are still in custody.

As part of ongoing investigations into the activities of dissident republicans, two arrest operations were carried out, one in Dundalk and one in Ardee, which resulted in the arrest of 5 males; 2 were arrested in Dundalk town and 3 in Ardee, Louth today, the 8th August 2010.

At approx 11.25am a car was stopped and searched by the Emergency Response Unit on Ecco Road, Dundalk, a firearm and balaclava were located during the course of the search.  Two men (in their mid 20's and mid 30's) were arrested and are currently being detained in Dundalk Garda Station under the provisions of Section 30 Offences the State Act 1939 as amended.

In Ardee a car was stopped and searched by the Emergency Response Unit at approx. 11.35am.  Three males (aged range from early 30's to mid 50's) were arrested: two are being detained in Drogheda and one in Balbriggan Garda Station under the provisions of section 30 Offences Against the State Act 1939 as amended.

Ammunition and a balaclava were discovered in the second car.

The Emergency Response Unit were supported by local Gardaí in the operations that were carried out.
