Man taken from the sea at Dun Laoghaire on the 27/3/08.

Ambulance control contacted Dun Laoghaire Garda Station to say that a man was in the sea off the East Pier in Dun Laoghaire.

Shortly after 10pm on 27th March ambulance control contacted Dun Laoghaire Garda Station to say that a man was in the sea off the East Pier in Dun Laoghaire.

On arrival at scene the crew of the Dun Laoghaire patrol car were met by members of the public who showed them where the man was in the sea and informed them of the fact that they had thrown lifebuoys to him.

Gardaí observed that this man was unable to get to the lifebuoys and appeared to be losing consciousness.

Garda Dermot Moriarty was lowered down 25 foot into the sea, using another lifebuoy, and he remained in the sea assisting this man until the arrival of the lifeboat.

He was in the water for approximately 15 minutes.

The man concerned was 44 years of age and was removed to St Vincent's Hospital by ambulance where he was examined and is expected to make a full recovery.

Garda Moriarty returned to the station and remained on duty until the end of his tour
