Road Safety Alert: Red, Orange and Yellow Weather Warnings for Storm Larenzo

We are asking road users to exercise caution while using the roads as Met Éireann have issued Red, Orange and Yellow weather warnings for strong winds.

Take extra care, check local weather and traffic conditions before setting out on a trip. High sided vehicles and motorcyclists are particularly vulnerable to strong winds.

An Orange weather warning is in place for Donegal, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo from 12pm today (Tuesday) until 9am Wednesday. Westerly winds will reach mean speeds of 65 to 75 km/h with damaging gusts reaching 110 to 130 km/h. There is also the risk of coastal flooding due to high seas.

A Yellow weather warning is also in place for Ireland with Westerly winds reaching mean speeds of 50 to 65km/h and gusts of 90 to 110 km/h. There is a risk of coastal flooding due to high seas along Atlantic coasts from 12pm Tuesday to 12pm Wednesday.

Remember:

• It takes longer to stop a vehicle in snow or on icy roads so slow down and allow extra distance between you and the vehicle in front.
• Keep a sharp lookout for pedestrians, cyclists and other vulnerable road users.
• Keep your windows clear of snow during your journey.
• Manoeuvre gently; avoid harsh braking, acceleration or steering as these can induce a skid.
• Use the highest gear possible to reduce the engine revs as this will help avoid wheel spin.
• When travelling downhill, especially through a series of bends, select a low gear as early as possible and allow your speed to reduce using the brake pedal gently.
