Ironman event in Cork on 23rd June 2019

The first ever Ironman event will take place in Cork on Sunday 23rd June 2019.  

Our traffic management plan for the event is described below. We hope that everyone attending has a safe and enjoyable day.

There will be traffic delays, so allow for extra travel time if traveling to East Cork. Please follows the direction of Gardaí and stewards.

Parking is available at Youghal Rugby Club. A free shuttle bus service will run from there. The N25 will remain open for the duration of the event.  

Please remember to respect the local residents and businesses in the area.

GENERAL TRAFFIC ARRANGEMENTS

Road Closures

(A) YOUGHAL TOWN AND ENVIRONS

R634-16 (part) Lighthouse Hill, Youghal from Friar Street to its junction with the R908-0 at Moll Goggins Corner from 06:00hrs Saturday 22nd June to 18:00hrs Monday 24th June (24 hour closure). Local vehicular access will be facilitated EXCEPT on Sunday 23rd June from 06:30hrs to 11:45hrs during which time no vehicular access and no on street parking will be permitted. R634-10, R634-12, R634-14 and R634-16 (part) (from its junction at the roundabout with the N25 at Rincrew through Youghal Town Centre (Main Street and Back Street) to its junction with the R908-0 at Moll Goggins Corner); L-3824-0 Dolphin Square and Dolphin Square Car Park; L-9517-0 Church Lane, Emmett Place & Ashe Street; L-3823-0 Windmill Hill; L-3822-2 & L-3822-3 Golf Links Road; L-3826-0 O’Rahilly Street; Barrys Lane; Nealons Quay and Car park; Front Strand Car park  and adjacent Car Parks; Claycastle Car Park from 06:30hrs to 23:45hrs Sunday 23rd June. Access to the upper town areas from N25 at Clashadonna.  Local vehicular access along the roads closed will not be available and on street parking will not be permitted.

R634-16 (part) and R634-19 (from its junction with the R908-0 at Moll Goggins Corner to junction with the R633-0 at Kennel.  The R633-0 and R633-31 from Kennel through Beanfield, Ballymadog, Clonpriest and Aghavine to Aghavine Cross from 06:30hrs to 14:00hrs Sunday 23rd June. No Alternative Route available.  Local vehicular access along the roads closed will not be available. A local access crossing point to Redbarn will be available at Beanfield Cross Roads.

(B) BALLYMACODA TO SHANAGARRY

L3815-49 from its junction with the R633 at Aghavine Cross; R633-67 from its junction with the L3815-49 to Gortavadda; L3816-0 (part) (Ballymacoda Road) from its junction with the R633 at Gortavadda to its junction with the L3819-65; The L3819-65, L3819-47, L-3819-17 & L-3819-0 (part) Coast Road from its junction with the L3816-0 (Knockadoon Road) to its junction with the L3815-0 (Garryvoe Townland); L7879-0 & L7899-0 to Garryvoe; R632-55 (part) & R-632-89 from Garryvoe to Shanagarry; R629-98 from Shanagarry to Ballymaloe Beg From 07:00hrs to 15:00hrs Sunday 23rd June.

No Alternative Route available to Ballymacoda / Knockadoon, Ballypherode and Mountcotton areas.  Local vehicular access along the roads closed will not be available however local access will be available to/from Garryvoe Beach & Hotel approaching on the R632 from Ladysbridge – follow directions of Traffic Marshals and An Garda Síochána.

Local access to Ballymaloe and Barnabrow will be available from the L3818 & L3630 - follow directions of Traffic Marshals and An Garda Síochána.

Crossing point from Ballycotton and Churchtown: Travelling north on the R629-127  Ballycotton Road follow directions of Traffic Marshals and An Garda Síochána at the race Crossing Point to access L7881-0 School Road Shanagarry; continue to the L3818-27 to the R632 at Garryvoe Cross Roads (Mullins X).  This alternative route is also applicable in the reverse direction.  Expect Delays at the Crossing Point.

(C) CLOYNE TO MIDLETON

R629-59 from Ballymaloe Beg to Cloyne; L3633-0 (part) from Cloyne to Kilboy; L7673-0 (Kilcrone); L7678-0 (part) at Carriglusky; L7667-0 Carrigacrump; L7668-0 (part) & L3651-31 (part) to Lower Whitewell Cross; R630-68 (part), R630-34, R-630-0 from Lower Whitewell Cross to Ballick Road; L3621-0 (Bailick Road and Broderick Street); R907-0 (part) Main Street between Broderick Street and Connolly Street; R627-0 Connolly Street and Dungourney Road to Broomfield Junction from 07:30hrs to 16:00hrs Sunday 23rd June.

Local vehicular access along the roads closed will not be available other than as follows: one way traffic southbound will be maintained on Bailick Road from Father Murphy Place / Riverside Estate to The Dark Road.

Alternative route from Rostellan, Aghada and Whitegate areas: Travelling north on the R630 Whitegate Road to Lower Whitewell follow directions of Traffic Marshals and An Garda Síochána at the race Crossing Point to access the R631 Cloyne Road; continue to Cloyne and turn left on the R629 Ballinacurra Road to rejoin the R630 in Ballinacurra.  Expect Delays at the Crossing Point.  This alternative route is also applicable in the reverse direction. 

Alternative route from Saleen & East Ferry areas: approach Bawnard Cross from Rathcoursey follow directions of Traffic Marshals and An Garda Síochána at the race Crossing Point to access the L3629, continue to Bowles Gate X and turn left onto the R629 Ballinacurra Road to rejoin the R630 in Ballinacurra.  Expect Delays at the Crossing Point.  This alternative route is also applicable in the reverse direction. 

Alternative route for Midleton Main Street:  Travelling on the R626 from Lisgoold to Lower Main Street, detour on the Northern Relief Road to the N25 to the Youghal Road. This alternative route is also applicable in the reverse direction. 

(D) MIDLETON TO MORLEYS CROSS

R-627-92 & R-627-129 from Broomfield Junction through Dungourney to Morley’s Cross from 08:00hrs to 17:00hrs Sunday 23rd June. Local vehicular access along the roads closed will not be available.A local Crossing Point will be available in Dungourney follow directions of Traffic Marshals and An Garda Síochána.  Expect Delays at the local Crossing Point.  HGV vehicles travelling between Castlelyons and Mogeely are advised to travel via the Castlelyons Midleton Road to Midleton / N25 to Castlemartyr and turn at the traffic lights for Mogeely.  This advisory route is also applicable in the reverse direction.

A local Crossing Point will be available in Dungourney follow directions of Traffic Marshals and An Garda Síochána.  Expect Delays at the local Crossing Point.  HGV vehicles travelling between Castlelyons and Mogeely are advised to travel via the Castlelyons Midleton Road to Midleton / N25 to Castlemartyr and turn at the traffic lights for Mogeely.  This advisory route is also applicable in the reverse direction.

(E) MORLEYS CROSS TO YOUGHAL

L-3802-0, L-3802-31, L-3802-50 Morleys Cross to Mount Uniacke; L-3803-35 Mount Uniacke to Inch; L-3808-0 & L-3808-31(part), L-7892-0, L-3807-39 & L-3807-55, L-3808-63 (part), & L-3807-57 (part) Inch to Youghal via Youghalpark, Clasheel, Ballinvarrig, Ballymacask, and Quarry Road from 08:30hrs to 18:00hrs Sunday 23rd June.

Local vehicular access along the roads closed will not be available.  A local Crossing Point will be available at Ballyre Cross – follow directions of Traffic Marshals and An Garda Síochána.  Expect Delays at the local Crossing Point.

Travel Advice

If travelling from Cork or Waterford, the N25 is available for all traffic.

There are limited crossing points available on the cycle route. Junctions will be manned by stewards, traffic marshals and An Garda Síochána. Priority on the closed roads will be given to cyclists.

Plan your travel and expect delays around Midleton, Youghal and the cycle route.

The emergency services will be cooperating on the day to ensure there is no disruption to services.

Residents

Whilst there is a number of crossing points along the route, residents should be aware that during the race you may not be able to drive to and from your home. We would recommend that you check if your home is on race route and if so, park your vehicle somewhere where it can be accessed. If you are unsure if your home is on the route, please contact the event organisers on 085-1112031 or Midleton Garda Station on 021-462 1550.

Transport

Bus stops in Midleton have been altered slightly. For information please see www.buseireann.ie

Parking & Drop off Area

Parking is available at Youghal Rugby Club, Frogmore, Parkmountain, Youghal, Co. Cork at a cost of €5. A free shuttle bus will run from the rugby club. For more information click here.

After The Event

Following the event we would ask that everyone follows the direction of Gardaí and stewards. The attendance through the town over the weekend is expected to be around 10,000 so we would ask for everyone to have patience on the roads for the duration.
