Elder Abuse Awareness Day 15 June 2019

UN world Elder Abuse Awareness day 15th of June 2019.

Elder abuse is a single or repeated act, or lack of appropriate action, occurring within any relationship where there is an expectation of trust which causes harm or distress to an older person or violates their human and civil rights.

Elder abuse can take many forms including:

  • Physical
  • Sexual
  • Physchological
  • Financial
  • Neglect
  • Discriminatory

To report elder abuse:

  • Call An Garda Síochána on 999 or 112.
  • Visit your local Garda station.
  • Contact HSE elder abuse service through your GP, Public Health Nurse or local health centre.

In order to achieve An Garda Síochána mission of “Keeping People Safe”, we will continue to protect all persons and prevent harm to the most vulnerable in society.

As part of our Policing Plan 2019, we are committed to positive engagement with communities and key stakeholders, including SAFEGUARDING IRELAND, to listen to and understand their policing needs and work in partnership to address these needs.

This includes ensuring accessibility to a professional policing service for all vulnerable persons and groups.

Any elder abuse which amounts to a crime, whether physical, financial, sexual or otherwise will be fully investigated by An Garda Síochána and victims will receive appropriate support during the investigation and any prosecution process.

To that end, we intend to publish a “Positive ageing Strategy” later this year.

We encourage any person experiencing any form of Elder Abuse to speak to a person they trust, and contact An Garda Síochána.
