Crime Trends during Covid-19 March-May 2020

An Garda Síochána is releasing operational crime figures to demonstrate indicative crime trends for the 3-month period of March/ April/ May 2020 compared to the same period in 2019. 

An impact of the national response to the COVID-19 pandemic is that thefts, in general, have reduced but Crime has not stopped and criminals continue to look for opportunities to exploit, e.g.:

  • Burglaries; although a reported reduction of -44%, in excess of 2,000 burglaries were reported in this 3 month period.
  • Theft from shop (shoplifting) down -39% was reported in excess of 3,800 occasions.
  • Theft of cars -43% and pedal cycles -9% have reduced, in excess of 540 vehicles and 1100 pedal cycles were stolen during this period.
