Advice for patrons travelling to Limerick - May Bank Holiday 2018

An Garda Siochana, Limerick Division are delighted to welcome all patrons to Limerick this Bank Holiday weekend. There are a number of sporting and cultural events taking place all through the weekend and Gardaí would like to offer the following advice to those travelling to the city to enjoy this weekend’s festivities.


In its 14th year, Riverfest attracts a large number of visitors to the city. This year’s festival includes Riverfest on the Shannon, the Riverfest BBQ Competition, the Riverfestival village in Arthur’s Quay Park,  and spectacular fireworks display. The festival runs from 4th May-7th May 2018

Gardaí would like to advise patrons attending the Riverfest festival that the following road closures will be in place for the Riverfest festival (excluding the Great Limerick Run)

Roads to be closed to Vehicular Traffic and Parking Date and Times:

Clancy Strand (Road No. L10085-1 and L10085-0) from its junction with Thomond Bridge (Road No. R445-23) to its junction with Ennis Road (Road No. R857-4) From 21.30hrs to 23.00hrs Sunday 6th May 2018

Sarsfield Bridge (Road No. R857-3) from its junction with Ennis Road (Road No. R 857-4) to its junction with Henry Street (Road No. R526-17) From 21.30hrs to 23.00hrs Sunday 6th May, 2018
Howleys Quay (Road No. R527-12) from its junction with Lr. Cecil Street (Road No. L11069-11) to its junction with Shannon Street (Road No. R527-11) From 21.00hrs Friday 4th May, 2018 to 23.00hrs Saturday 5th May 2018

Bons Secours Hospital Great Limerick Run

The Bon Secours Hospital Great Limerick Run takes place on Sunday 6th May. The event comprises of a marathon beginning at 09.00, half marathon beginning at 10.30 and 6 mile run beginning at 12.30.

To maximise spectator’s enjoyment of the event and to ensure the safety and security of the competitors the Gardaí wish to advise that the following road closures and parking restrictions published by Limerick City and County Council are available at http://www.greatlimerickrun.com/road-closures/.

In summary Limerick City Centre is closed for the duration of the event however vehicles (no HGV/Buses) do have access to the city centre via Bishops Quay, Harveys Quay, Honans Quays. Access to the Regional Maternity Hospital, Ennis Road is only via Belfield Gardens from the Old Cratloe Road.  Access to the University Hospital, Dooradoyle is not affected.

Crime Prevention Advice:

As it is a very busy weekend in the city Sgt Ber Leetch, Crime Prevention Officer would like to offer the following advice to those travelling to the city to enjoy this year’s festival:

• Don’t leave any valuables in your vehicle and if you must, keep them out of view.  This should be done before you get to your destination.

• We would advise anyone to carry bags cross body or better still leave them at home.

• If carrying a wallet best to carry it in an inside pocket of jacket or front pocket of jeans.

• There are likely to be large crowds at the weekend so parents should exercise caution and be aware of their child’s whereabouts at all times. 

• Garda members will be in possession of public safety wristbands for children and vulnerable people who are attending events.

Thomond Park- Pro 14 Match Munster V Edinburgh

Munster V Edinburgh takes place at Thomond Park Stadium on Saturday 5th May 2018. In order to maximise your enjoyment of the match An Garda Síochána would like to offer the following information in relation to traffic management and safety at the match in Thomond Park.


1. Thomond Bridge / Sarsfield Bridge and New Shannon Bridge will remain open to Two Way Traffic throughout the event.

2. Traffic travelling out bound (N7) on Sexton Street North towards Old Cratloe Road and past the stadium or intending to turn right at Hassetts Cross northbound along Kileely Road(R464) will not be restricted but due to volume, delays can be expected from as early as 13.00hrs. Similarly, traffic travelling outbound on N18 can expect to experience delays also.

3. No general parking spaces are available within the grounds and vehicle access to the grounds (this includes access for vehicles with special needs) is limited by Pass Only issued by Stadium Management. Parking restrictions will be put in place near the Stadium for local residents. Vehicles found in breach are liable to be impounded.

4. Pre match Road closures and diversions as set out below will come into effect at 13.45hrs and will remain in place until at least 15.15hrs. Where road closures / diversions apply all public services vehicles [including taxis / hackneys] buses / minibuses and specially adapted [disabled] vehicles and vehicles with Residents Permits will be allowed proceed beyond the road closures.


Traffic travelling inbound along the Ennis Road and intending to turn left at Ivan’s for Northern Ring Road (N7) (Brookville Avenue) and travelling North bound from Clonmacken Road intending to proceed towards Northern Ring Road (N7) (Brookville Ave) can expect delays and are subject to volume of patrons attending event liable to be diverted on Ennis Road at Ivan’s Shop, Caherdavin.

Traffic travelling inbound (R464) from Parteen, Moyross, Long Pavement direction will be diverted left onto New Road subject to volume of patrons attending event, Kileely and may be subject to delay / diversion.

Road Closures:

Road Closures will apply from 13.45hrs onwards at the following locations:

• Mayorstone Drive at its junction with Avonmore Road

• Shelbourne Road Upper at its junction with Shelbourne Park

• Shelbourne Road Upper at it’s junction with Mayorstone Drive

• Old Cratloe Road at its junction with Mayorstone Avenue

• Old Cratloe Road at its junction with Mayorstone Upper

• Old Cratloe Road near its junction with Merval Drive

• Kileely Road at its junction with Ballynanty Road

The Old Cratloe Road – Cratloe Road Roundabout to Hassett’s Cross and Shelbourne Road – Hassett’s Cross to Union Cross will be closed to all traffic (for approx 30 minutes / half an hour) on termination of the Match to permit the safe egress of patrons from the Stadium.


The Garda advice to patrons is to arrive early and to avail of city centre on-street parking and also of parking available at city centre car parks.

Patrons can also walk to the stadium (15-20 mins from the City Centre), avail of the Bus Service from the city or avail of Park and Ride services.

Patrons requesting wheelchair accessible parking are advised to contact the Ticket Office at Thomond Park in relation to parking available in the area
