Background:
Michael Walsh, born on 14th March, 1901, came from Barnfield, Ballina, Co. Mayo. Having previously worked as a groom he joined An Garda Síochána on 20th March, 1925. He had served in the Volunteers (1919-1922) and the National Army (1922-1924), where he held the rank of Lieutenant. He was appointed to Detective Branch on 16th July, 1925. A married man with two children, D/Garda Walsh also served at Tullamore, Athlone, and Redhills. He had an interest in equestrian sports.

Circumstances:
On 1st October, 1942, Detective Garda Walsh was one of a party of Gardai who went to a house at Lismancanigan, Mountnugent, Kilnaleck, Co. Cavan attempting to arrest a known criminal suspect.  As the Gardai approached the suspect discharged a firearm at them, wounding Detective Garda Walsh.  He subsequently died from his injuries later that day at Cavan Surgical Hospital.
