Background:
Sean (John) Gantly, born on 6th October, 1899, came from Roscrea, Co. Tipperary. Having previously worked in administration he joined An Garda Síochána on 27th June, 1923. A member of the Gaelic League he also saw military service in ‘B’ Coy, 2nd Dublin Battalion. He was promoted Sergeant (1924), Superintendent (1925) and Chief Superintendent (1941). He was married with six children and also served in Kells, Donegal and Killarney.

Circumstances:

On 21st January, 1948, Chief Superintendent Gantly was leading a party of Gardai from the Detective Branch, Dublin Castle in a search for escaped prisoners at the Hammond Lane Foundry, Dublin when he was accidentally shot.
