Background:
John Flynn, born on 12th November, 1929, came from Renadaunpaun, Ballymacarbry, Co. Waterford. Having previously worked as a clerk he joined An Garda Síochána on 11th November, 1953. He formerly served in the FCA (1949-1953). Appointed to Detective Branch on 17th July, 1961, he also served at Trim and Hackballscross. He was single.

Circumstances:

On 16th November, 1961, Detective Garda Flynn was on duty escorting a juvenile to a detention centre at Daingain, Co.Offaly. While in transit the vehicle in which they were travelling was involved in a traffic accident. Detective Garda Flynn died as a result of the injuries he received.
