Background:
Nathy Cawley, born on 10th June, 1944, came from Fetherneen, Ballinacarrow, Ballymote, Co. Sligo. Having previously worked as a carpenter, he joined An Garda Síochána on 16th June, 1965. Garda Cawley served at Clontibret Garda Station prior to his transfer to the Divisional Traffic Corps, based at Monaghan. He was a prominent GAA footballer as well as an active referee. Garda Cawley was a married man with five children.

Circumstances:

On 24th February, 1982 Garda Cawley, with Garda Patrick Ruttledge, was on explosives escort duty in a Garda patrol car when the vehicle was involved in a collision with an Army truck at Brackagh, Broomfield, Co. Monaghan. Garda Cawley died instantly
