Press Briefing - Fatal assault in Athy, Kildare on the 18/7/13

Gardaí will hold a press briefing at the scene of last nights incident at 2.00pm on Friday 19th July 2013.

Gardaí are investigating what they believe to be a fatal assault in Athy, Co.Kildare which occurred on 18th July 2013.


Shortly before mid-night Gardaí received a telephone call reporting the body of of a person located at a walkway between St John's lane and Greenhills housing estate in Athy. On arrival Gardaí discovered a man lying in the laneway, with what appeared to be a wound to his head. Gardaí rendered first-aid until an ambulance arrived and removed the man to Naas Hospital. The injured man died at Naas Hospital in the early hours of this morning.


The area has been sealed off pending a forensic technical examination and an incident room has been set up at Athy Garda Station. The office of the State Pathologist has been informed and the Garda Technical Bureau are on their way to the scene.


The dead man is 56 years old and lives locally.  Anyone with information is asked to contact Athy Garda Station on 059 8634210.
