Career highlights:

Assistant Commissioner McElgunn was attested to An Garda Síochána in 1991 and has extensive  experience in various security and policing roles.

He has formed part of investigation teams in major criminal investigations and has represented An Garda Síochána at numerous international security fora.

In his career, so far, he has served at the Criminal Assets Bureau, Clondalkin, Ballyfermot and Finglas Garda Stations. As a Superintendent, he headed up An Garda Síochána’s Major Emergency Management Section.

For approximately half his career he has served in various roles at Security & Intelligence Section (Garda HQ).

From early 2020, he held the position of Chief Superintendent, at Dublin South Central Division (Dublin 2, 8 , 4), before his promotion to Assistant Commissioner, in May 2022, when he was allocated to the North Western Region.

Qualifications:

Assistant Commissioner McElgunn holds a First Class Honours Degree in Police Leadership (UCD), post grads in Governance and Human Rights. He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy (Session #277 (2019)), Quantico, Virginia, USA.

In 2021, he qualified  as a ‘Gold’ Public Order Public Safety Commander.  And, in 2022, he graduated, with distinction, from the UK College of Policing’s Strategic Command Course.
