Anticipated Visit of the 47th President of the United States of America, Mr. Donald J. Trump to Ireland 12th & 13th September 2026
It is anticipated that the 47th President of the United States of America, Mr. Donald J. Trump will visit Ireland on the 12th & 13th September 2026.
On the morning of Saturday 12th September 2026 the visit will be concentrated in the Phoenix Park including Áras an Uachtaráin, Farmleigh House and the U.S Ambassadors Residence.
On the afternoon of Saturday 12th September 2026 and during Sunday 13th September 2026 the visit will be concentrated in Co. Clare as the President of the United States of America attends the Amgen Irish Open 2026 at Trump International Golf Links & Hotel, Doonbeg, Ireland.
The 47th President of the United States of America will arrive at Dublin Airport, on the morning of the 12th September 2026 and depart later, early afternoon 12th September 2026. Normal operations will continue at Dublin Airport at all times, however travelling members of the public should allow additional time to arrive at the airport due to possible rolling road closures.
The 47th President of the United States of America will arrive at Shannon Airport, in the early afternoon of the 12th September 2026, and depart on the evening of 13th September 2026. Normal operations will continue at Shannon Airport at all times, however travelling members of the public should allow additional time to arrive at the airport due to possible rolling road closures.
In general, traffic restrictions for the visit will be kept to the minimum required and it is intended that any impact on the public will be localised and minimal. Further specific details on local road closures and traffic diversions will be published in specific notifications for Dublin, Clare and the Amgen Irish Open.
The public can expect localised road closures to facilitate events and temporary rolling road closures to facilitate security escorts on the 12th and 13th September 2026, in the locations above.
The policing and security operation for the visit of the 47th President of the United States of America will be one of the biggest policing and security operations implemented by An Garda Síochána.
An Garda Síochána has been involved in intense, in-depth and extensive planning for this policing and security operation over recent weeks. In preparation for the visit of the 47th President of the United States of America, An Garda Síochána has implemented the following provisions
- Declaration of an Extraordinary Event in accordance with the Midland Working Time Agreement
- Development of a National Roster arrangement for the period 9th – 14th September 2026 to provide resources for this extraordinary event,
- Re-Allocation of Garda Staff and Garda Trainees from the Garda College to support the Policing and Security operation on the 12th September 2026
- Liaison with the Irish Defence Forces for appropriate assistance in aide to the civil power (C70s)
- Liaison with Government Departments, National Transport Providers, relevant Local Authorities, Irish Aviation Authority, Dublin Airport Authority and Shannon Authority
- Liaison with International Police Forces
- Liaison with the US Mission Ireland and relevant United States Authorities
Business continuity:
- The declaration of an extraordinary event and the development of the National Roster arrangement will also ensure business continuity across the country and resources for any other policing operations required during this period.
- There will be no reduction in day-to-day policing services.
The policing and security operation is a whole of An Garda Síochána response. Over the course of the policing and security operation members of An Garda Síochána will perform over 10,000 12-hour tours of duty from Friday 11th – Sunday 13th September 2026
The Policing and security operation involves
- Frontline Uniform and Plain Clothes Personnel, supported by specialist units from
- Special Tactics and Operations Command (STOC) including Close Protection Officers, Emergency Response, Armed Support and Counter Drone Units
- Roads Policing Units including National Escort Unit
- National Public Order Units, including 4 water cannon (2 An Garda Síochána, 2 PSNI)
- National Search Teams
- National Support Services (Horses, Dogs, Water and Air Support Units)
- Special Detective Unit and National Bureaus (from Organised and Serious Crime) providing additional specialist static and mobile armed protection
- National and Local Intelligence Units
International policing and security operations also involve the support of International partners, including the Police Service of Northern Ireland, partners from High Risk Security Network (HRSN) and military partners supporting the Irish Defence Forces. International Police forces are providing high-level specialist support services only and are not involved in frontline policing.
The implementation of any modern large policing and security operation requires and is supported by HR, Finance, ICT and a range of other support services predominantly provided by Garda Staff.
Frontline Operational Control rooms have been established at various locations in Dublin and Clare, supported by Regional Strategic and Tactical Command rooms. CCTV feeds are replicated in all control rooms in each region.
This operation in the County Clare is supported by the development of an event app, which will be live on the mobility devices of all Garda personnel deployed on this policing and security operation. The event app provides specific operational details and maps into the hands of every Garda on duty.
The deployment of a policing and security operation of this scale has required significant logistical support. Over the duration of the operation from Friday 11th – Sunday 13th September 2026 it is expected that over 25,000 meals will be provided to Garda personnel at localised catering facilities. Garda personnel will also be provided further welfare support including welfare hubs, portaloos, inclement weather shelters and the provision of a fleet of welfare vans, which are mobile units and contain hot and cold drinks, snacks and fruit.
An Garda Síochána will deploy various styles of barriers including heavy vehicle mitigation (HVM) barriers, and security scanning equipment where required.
An Garda Síochána has procured additional transport, mainly buses of various sizes, both purchased and rented. Purchased vehicles will remain on the Garda fleet and reassigned for operational duties across the country after the event.

An Garda Síochána is working to ensure that the nature and scale of our policing and security operation continues to be proportionate to the need to protect everyone’s safety.
Our objective is to continue to share as much information with the public where necessary as soon as we are in a position to do so.
We would ask members of the public to heed the advice and instructions of Gardaí and we thank them for their continuing co-operation.
Gardaí have, and continue to, liaise with business and local residents in the key locations and will continue to communicate directly with them during the visit.
In general, An Garda Síochána advises the public in the areas affected in Dublin and County Clare to plan their day, leave extra time for their journeys and to expect localised delays.
Amgen Irish Open:
The Amgen Irish Open is taking place at Trump International Golf Links & Hotel, Doonbeg, Ireland from Thursday 10th to Sunday 13th September 2026.
The Amgen Irish Open will continue as normal during the visit of the 47th President of the United States of America.
Patrons attending the Amgen Irish Open will continue to have access to designated park n ride facilities and bus transfers to the venue.
Patrons should provide additional time in attending the venue on Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th as enhanced security searches will be in place to access the venue.
Patrons should follow any additional information provided to them by the DP World Tour event organisers.
Players, Staff and Guests attending the Amgen Irish Open should also follow any additional information provide to them in advance by the DP World Tour event organisers.
