Gardaí are investigating a serious assault that occurred on Athlunkard Street in Limerick city on Tuesday, 17th March 2026.
At approximately 9.40pm Gardaí and emergency services responded to the incident.
A man, aged in his 50s, who was injured during the incident was brought to University Hospital Limerick where he remains in a serious condition.
A man, aged in his 20s, has been arrested in connection with this investigation and is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at a Garda Station in the Limerick Division.
The scene remains preserved for a technical examination with Athlunkard Street closed between the junctions of Island Road and Corbally roundabout. Local diversions are in place.
Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this incident to contact them.
Any road users or pedestrians who were in the Athlunkard Street area between 9pm and 10pm on Tuesday 17th March 2026 and may have camera footage (including dash-cam) are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí.
