An Garda Síochána conducted a nationwide Roads Policing Operation during the St Patrick’s Bank Holiday Weekend.
Tragically, six (6) people lost their lives in road traffic collisions over the course of the operation. This brings the total number of road fatalities this year to 38—an increase of six compared to the same date last year.
As part of this operation, Gardaí carried out both statutory Mandatory Intoxicant Testing (MIT) and regular, high-visibility policing checkpoints.
A total of 235 individuals were arrested for driving under the influence of an intoxicant (alcohol or drugs).
Over the course of the operation, in excess of 5,000 motorists were detected for speeding offences. A further 500 drivers were detected for mobile phone and seat belt offences.
Notable speeding incidents recorded during the week include:
• 124 km/h in an 80 km/h zone on the R178 in Redbog, Dundalk, Co. Louth
• 138 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on the N18 Ballinacurra (Weston), Co. Limerick
• 133 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on the South Ring Road

• 89 km/h in a 60 km/h zone on the R515 Elton, Knocklong, Co. Limerick
An Garda Síochána continues to appeal to all road users: never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs. All drivers are urged to slow down, remain vigilant and give their full attention to the road.
