Public Consultation Live Today: Code of Practice on Recording Devices used with an Aerial Platform

Issue Date: 03/03/2026

An Garda Síochána has today launched a public consultation for a draft Code of Practice on Recording Devices used in conjunction with an Aerial Platform.

The types of aerial platforms covered by this code include manned – such as the Garda helicopter or fixed-wing aircraft, or unmanned – such as drones.

An Garda Síochána requires the latest technologies to fulfil its mission to keep our communities safe and our state secure.

The Garda Síochána (Recording Devices) Act 2023 provides the current legal framework for the use of various recording devices. Part 8 of this Act stipulates that a Code of Practice is required.

The aim of the Code of Practice is to provide further detail on the general operation of recording devices used in conjunction with an aerial platform.

It also aims to ensure these devices are used only for the principal purposes as set out under the 2023 Act. These include the prevention, investigation, detection and prosecution of criminal offences.

An Garda Síochána is now seeking input from members of the public on the draft Code of Practice.

Engagement with relevant Government departments will take place alongside the public consultation.

Acting Deputy Commissioner, Security, Strategy and Governance, Paul Cleary said:

"An Garda Síochána is committed to deploying the latest technologies to keep our communities safe.

"Modern technologies are required to face modern threats. Serious offences and public disorder can occur dynamically. The deployment of this technology will support An Garda Síochána in meeting these new and emerging challenges.
"An Garda Síochána welcomes the views of the public who we serve. The public’s views on how these recording devices are deployed and operated will help An Garda Síochána to continue to provide a community-focused policing service.”
