Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly has appointed Chief Superintendent Denis Ferry to Assistant Commissioner. This follows an open competition for the rank of Assistant Commissioner.
Assistant Commissioner Ferry has been appointed to the role of Assistant Commissioner, Roads Policing and Community Engagement.
Assistant Commissioner Catharina Gunne has been appointed to Assistant Commissioner, Governance and Accountability. She was previously Assistant Commissioner, Roads Policing and Community Engagement.
Assistant Commissioner Jonathan Roberts has been appointed to Assistant Commissioner, Dublin Metropolitan Region. He was previously Assistant Commissioner, Governance and Accountability and had been Acting Assistant Commissioner, DMR.
As per the Policing, Security, and Community Safety Act, the Commissioner may, following a selection process, appoint, with the approval of the Garda Board, persons to the rank of Assistant Commissioner.
All these appointments take effect from Monday, June 29, 2026.
• Assistant Commissioner Ferry was attested to An Garda Síochána in September 1995.
• He has operational and specialist experience across the ranks of Garda, Sergeant and Inspector.
• He has served across Strategic Transformation and IT Operations & Security as a Superintendent.
• He has been Chief Superintendent, HRM since 2021 with responsibility for Garda Allocations, Health and Safety, Employee Assistance, Workforce Planning and RDMS implementation. He also supported the rollout of the Organisation Operating Model during that time.
• Prior to that he was Divisional Officer for Wexford & Wicklow from 2019 to 2021.
