Tomorrow Saturday 25th July 2026 An Garda Síochána is expanding its taser pilot to Henry Street Garda Station, Limerick Division.
From 07:00hrs (7am) tomorrow Saturday 25th July 2026 a selected number of uniform (frontline) Gardaí, from Henry Street Garda Station, will be authorised to carry tasers while on operational duties.
Tasers will only be carried by the selected uniform Gardaí in conjunction with body worn cameras (BWCs).
An Garda Síochána launched its taser pilot in December 2025 in four locations – Store Street, Pearse Street, and Kevin Street in Dublin, and Waterford.
With the expansion of the pilot to Henry Street Garda Station in Limerick city, 200 Gardaí have now successfully completed their training and have been authorised to carry tasers on duty.
In line with Garda policy, these locations have Gardaí who are using body-cams. Garda policy states that only Gardaí with body-cams can carry tasers. Henry Street Garda Station, Limerick Division is a pilot location for body-cams.
Since December 2025, tasers have been used 18 times and have proven to be successful at de-escalating volatile and violent incidents. In six of these 18 incidents the subject produced a weapon.
Of the 18 uses, there were four discharges, six instances of drawing and arming, one where a warning arc was activated, seven where the subject had the taser’s laser pointed at them (laser painted) by Gardaí.
There were no serious injuries incurred by either subjects or Gardaí in these 18 incidents.
All four discharges were referred to the Police Ombudsman, Fiosrú, as per Garda policy.
All Gardaí with tasers have undergone a comprehensive three-day taser training course grounded in Irish Constitution and European Convention on Human Rights principles.
The deployment of tasers will be fully human rights compliant and will be subject to rigorous evaluation prior to any decision for wider roll-out of tasers within An Garda Síochána.
The taser pilot has been discussed with Garda oversight bodies including the Department of Justice, Home Affairs and Migration, the Policing and Community Safety Authority, and the Strategic Human Rights Advisory Committee for An Garda Síochána.
