An Garda Síochána On Board With Transport Safety Partners as Railway Level Crossing Camera Begins Operating, 30th January 2026

Issue Date: 28/01/2026

An Garda Síochána supports our partners in transport safety as the first red light camera at a railway level crossing will commence operation at the Merrion Gates in Dublin 4 at 12pm on Friday 30th January 2026.

Gardaí work closely with Iarnród Éireann and local authorities, including Dublin City Council, to help ensure people’s safety at the many railway level crossings located around the country.

This camera will assist Gardaí to help prevent red-light running and detect motorists speeding.

An Garda Síochána, along with our road safety partner GoSafe, will process and prosecute any infringement by road users.

The cameras will record motorists using level crossings and automatically detect:

  • Proceeding beyond a stop line when red lights are flashing at a railway level crossing, which is subject of a Fixed Charge Notice (FCN) of €80 and two (2) penalty points.
  • Speeding, which is subject of a Fixed Charge Notice (FCN) of €160 and three (3) penalty points

The new camera is the first of up to six which will be used across a number of level crossings around the country.

Iarnród Éireann confirmed that in 2025 there were 23 incidents in which vehicles collided with level crossing gates, compared with 28 in 2024.

As the first camera begins operation, Assistant Commissioner Roads Policing and Community Engagement, Catharina Gunne, said: "We welcome this next stage of co-operation with our partners in transport safety. The effective use of this kind of technology will greatly help us to keep rail and road users safe through enforcement.

"But we still appeal to people to take care when approaching a railway level crossing, to be aware of other road users and to pay heed to the warning lights indicating that it is unsafe for you to proceed, and require you to stop so as to avoid any risk to you or the safety of others.”
