Official Opening of Newly Renovated Rathcormac Garda Station – 14th September 2023

Issue Date: 14th September 2023

Minister for Justice, Helen McEntee TD and Garda Commissioner Drew Harris have today officially reopened the newly refurbished Rathcormac Garda Station.   The Office of Public Works commenced its refurbishment project on October 5th, 2022 with the aim of making it a more modern, high-spec facility for Garda personnel to operate, as well as enhance the policing service provided to victims of crime and the general public in North Cork.

The project took approximately five months to complete, and during that period the local Gardaí were temporarily based at Watergrasshill Garda Station.

Among the works and improvements carried out are that the station is now wheelchair accessible, and the public office now has the ability to cater for people with hearing impairments.

As part of An Garda Síochána’s ongoing commitment to fulfilling the targets set out in the Climate Action Plan 2023, Rathcormac Garda Station is now fully insulated, has a new energy efficient heating system and is lit with LED lighting.  This station is now also one of the first Garda facilities in the Southern Region to have an electric vehicle charging point.

The Garda Station in Rathcormac first opened in November 1923 and required an extensive upgrade in order to meet the standards required to provide a modern police service.

Speaking at the opening of the newly refurbished building to the public, Garda Commissioner Drew Harris said, "An Garda Síochána remains committed to community policing and the investment in Rathcormac Garda Station is a prime example of this.

"Today’s re-opening is a positive reflection of our dedication to providing a modern policing service to the people of Ireland.

"I know that these facilities will further strengthen our capabilities here in Co. Cork, as an effective and efficient police service dedicated to guarding the peace and upholding the rule of law.”

In its new facilities, Rathcormac Garda Station represents the future of community based policing in rural Ireland and its advantages in keeping people safe.
