As part of Operation Thor and ongoing investigations into local criminal activity, Gardaí in the Westmeath Division conducted a number of days of action between 17th February and 24th February 2023.
Throughout the week, a number of crime and burglary patrols, both covert and high visibility, were carried out along with a series of checkpoints. A number of road traffic and crime related detections were made.
Six properties and an area of wasteland were searched in Athlone, Co. Westmeath by Gardaí from the Divisional Drugs Unit, the Armed Support Unit and Garda Dog Unit. A number of detections were made under the Misuse of Drugs Act and three persons were arrested. Approximately €4,500 worth of various controlled drugs were seized including heroin, cannabis herb, cannabis resin and cocaine.
A total of three people who were sought in relation to a number of theft and burglary offences were arrested and charged before the courts. One male was arrested in relation to a public order incident in Mullingar in October 2022; he was released without charge pending a file to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
In addition, Gardaí executed a total of 46 bench warrants in Athlone and Mullingar District Courts.
