Garda Commissioner Welcomes Appointment of Assistant Commissioners

Garda Commissioner Drew Harris has welcomed today’s appointment by the Policing Authority of Michael McElgunn, Angela Willis, and Justin Kelly as Assistant Commissioners in An Garda Síochána.

"These appointments are very welcome. Michael, Angela and Justin have extensive experience and knowledge from working across a range of areas in An Garda Síochána. This will be of great benefit to the organisation and the Garda Senior Leadership Team as we continue implementation of the improvement programme, A Policing Service For Our Future.”

Assistant Commissioner McElgunn has been allocated by the Commissioner to the role of Assistant Commissioner, North Western region from 30th May 2022.

Assistant Commissioner Willis has been allocated by the Commissioner to the role of Assistant Commissioner, Dublin Metropolitan Region from 30th May 2022.

Assistant Commissioner Kelly will formally take-up the role of Assistant Commissioner, Organised and Serious Crime on the retirement next month of Assistant Commissioner John O’Driscoll.

Michael McElgunn was most recently Chief Superintendent, DMR South Central Division. He previously served at Professional Standards; Major Emergency Management; Security & Intelligence, and Criminal Assets Bureau. He has served in An Garda Síochána for 31 years.

Angela Willis was most recently Detective Chief Superintendent, National Bureau of Crime Investigation (NBCI). She was previously Detective Chief Superintendent, Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau, as well as working in a number of departments and areas including the Serious Crime Review Team; Organisational Support Service/Garda National Immigration Bureau, Dublin Airport, and Cavan District. She has served in An Garda Síochána for 30 years.

Justin Kelly was most recently Detective Chief Superintendent, Special Detective Unit. He was previously Detective Superintendent, Protective Services Bureau, as well as a Detective Inspector, Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau, and an Inspector in Blanchardstown and Clondalkin. He has served in An Garda Síochána for 29 years.
