Operation Tara: €18,000 worth of suspected cocaine and cash seized Castlebar Co Mayo January 20, 2022

Gardaí in Mayo have seized €18,000 worth of suspected cocaine and cash under Operation Tara in Castlebar yesterday, January 20, 2022.

As part of an ongoing investigation targeting individuals involved in the sale and supply of drugs Gardaí attached to the Mayo Divisional Drugs Unit seized €17,500 worth of suspected cocaine and approximately €500 in cash which were discovered on lands in Castlebar shortly after 5.30pm on Thursday. 

A man in his late 20s was arrested at the scene in connection with this seizure and detained at Castlebar Garda Station under the provisions of Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act 1996.

He has been charged today, January 21, 2022 in connection with this seizure and will appear in court at a later date.

This seizure forms part of Operation Tara an enhanced national anti-drugs strategy, which was launched by Garda Commissioner Drew Harris on July 2, 2021. The focus of Operation Tara is to disrupt, dismantle and prosecute drug trafficking networks, at all levels - international, national, local - involved in the importation, distribution, cultivation, production, local sale and supply of controlled drugs.
