Issue Date: 24/05/2021

Gardaí have arrested and charged a man in relation to a robbery in Cork city on May 20, 2021.

Shortly before 4am a woman was cycling on Sarsfield Road when she was approached by a man who knocked her from her bicycle. The man then stole her bicycle and cycled away from the scene. The woman did not require medical attention following the incident.

As part of the investigation, uniform and detective Gardaí from Togher began gathering CCTV and searched online for any adverts selling the bicycle.

The bicycle was spotted on lost and found social media site and was recovered with the assistance of the Community Policing Unit in Togher.

A man, aged in his 20s, was later arrested on May 23, 2021 and was detained at Togher Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

He has since been charged and is due to appear before Cork City District Court this morning at 10.30am.

Crime Prevention Officer for Cork city, Sergeant Brian McSweeney said "We were able to track down this bicycle and return it to the owner far quicker as the lady had kept note of the serial number, which is located on the underside of the bicycle close to the pedals.

"We would recommend that everyone takes a photo of their bicycle, noting the serial number, and emails it back to themselves or stores it in the cloud”
